HISTORY
ANDIAL is an anagram made from the names of the founding members. From the company's formation in 1975, it has evolved into one of America's most successful and respected authorities on Porsche performance tuning.
ANDIAL established its credentials in the racing arena during an era when the privateer could effectively compete. The results of ANDIAL's Racing Division speak for itself. ANDIAL-prepared cars and engines have won on every major racetrack in the U.S.A.
Some of ANDIAL's major racing accomplishments include:
- The 24-Hours of Daytona saw ANDIAL's engine in the winner's circle from 1983 through 1987 and again in 1989. A note of interest: In 1987, the first through fifth place finishers were in ANDIAL cars.
- The IMSA Supercar Series Championship in 1992.
- IMSA-GT Championships in 83, 85, 86, and 87. North American GT-1 Endurance Cup Championship in 1994 and GTS-2 in 1996.
- SCCA World Challenge - USA in 1994.
- Class wins Pikes Peak in 94, 96, 97, and 98.
The list of driver's that campaigned ANDIAL-powered cars include: Al Holbert, the Andrettis, the Unsers, A.J. Foyt, Derek Bell, Rolf Stommelen, J. Rutherford, Danny Ongais, the Whittingtons, Bob Wollek, Harald Grohs, Hurley Haywood, Hans Stuck, Jim Busby, Pete Halsmer, Jeff Zwart, and many more.
Parallel to their racing venture and utilizing the experience racing provided, ANDIAL developed their street related performance applications. ANDIAL's philosophy towards performance tuning evolved through their participation in endurance racing. When you build cars that are able to win, year after year, an international 24-hour event such as Daytona, success depends on consistent, reliable performance of all the components interacting between power, chassis, and suspension. The art of performance tuning is to create the balance between these components to optimize overall performance for any given application. The objective of "Street Performance" is no different: reliable, usable power, available when required.
PAST
With the racing operation of ANDIAL firmly in place in one of our buildings, PORSCHE AG teamed-up with ANDIAL to develop the IMSA-legal engine for their 956 race car, resulting in the legendary and long-lived 962 race machine. Alwin (the "AL" in ANDIAL) became the official consultant for this program. After the untimely death of Al Holbert in 1988, then PORSCHE MOTORSPORT NORTH AMERICA's (PMNA) director, Alwin was appointed Motorsport Director and in 1997 became PMNA President. A post he held to his retirement in 2004. In the meantime, Arnold Wagner ("AN" in ANDIAL) and Dieter Inzenhofer ("DI" in ANDIAL) would continue to operate ANDIAL Street-Sport and special parts business.
ANDIAL TODAY
In 2005 it became evident that PMNA started to run out of room in their facility and a move was contemplated. It also became a fact that the two remaining ANDIAL partners were reaching an age where a slowdown of their business activity would be desirable. While their ex-partner Alwin had officially retired from PMNA the ANDIAL partners decided to slow down but not retire entirely. It was then fitting that PMNA would use the ANDIAL facility for their expansion and ANDIAL would move to a smaller place in Fountain Valley (a mile away) and forgo the daily service business in favor of concentrating on their specialties. Special engine projects, maintaining prior special engines, restoring race or other special cars and continued supply of parts that customers had come to rely on in the past 3 decades.
With our team comprising of Dieter, Arnold and Pete (a long time technician and parts specialist and now a partner) plus select former technicians, ANDIAL is able to keep the dynamics and experience concentrated in this ongoing story of devotion to the Porsche marquee and maintaining the respect it deserves.
